Underground Mining Alliance (UMA) has given 181 disinfected gumboots a second life through a donation to the Ghana Prisons Service’s Ahinsan Camp in Obuasi, supporting inmates involved in agricultural activities while reducing unnecessary waste.
The camp is home to 150 inmates who work across 187 acres of farmland, undertaking planting, cultivation and harvesting activities. The donated gumboots provide essential protection for those working on the farm, while ensuring equipment that remains fit for purpose continues to deliver value beyond its original use.
The initiative reflects UMA’s commitment to responsible resource use and our Never wasteful principle. By extending the useful life of the gumboots, the donation supports our social value pillar of Environmental Stewardship by reducing waste, while also demonstrating Local Collaboration through responding to a practical community need.
UMA, our joint venture with Rocksure International Limited, has been delivering underground mining services at Newmont Corporation’s Subika Gold Mine since 2017 and AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Gold Mine since 2019.
